SUBJECT : XMS Shells Using Extended Memory
DATE : 6/6/90
FYI # : 060690pf
OS VERSION : All
REVISION :
SHELL VERSION : v3.01
GENERAL INFORMATION : From talking to one of the engineers, our XMS shell
takes advantage of HMA, a special architecture using the first meg of extended
memory. The neat thing about HMA is that it's available to real mode
executables (without the previous hassle associated with the expanded EMS
paging slight of hand). The limiting facility within HMA is that only one
program at a time can utilize HMA memory.
Windows 3.0 can load and run as well, as it has it's own extended memory
manager, HIMEM.SYS, which uses all of the remaining extended memory after that
used by HMA.
